On May 4, Geeks Anonymes will host Sébastien Jodgone, the project’s academic lead, and Alain Mazy, who represents the commercial side of the project through the company Orthanc Team, for a talk titled“Free Software as a Factor of Resilience: The Many Lives of the Orthanc Project”

Orthanc is a free and open-source ecosystem dedicated to medical imaging. Now used worldwide, it enables the storage and exchange of images in hospitals, industry, and scientific settings. It also plays a key role in multicenter collaborations and the deployment of artificial intelligence models, as well as in numerous teleradiology portals.

Stemming from research by Sébastien Jodogne within the Department of Medical Physics at the University Hospital of Liège, the project saw widespread adoption, leading to the creation of the company Osimis. The company’s goal was to promote Orthanc through an open-source business model, combined with the development of proprietary software built on the Orthanc platform. Over the past four years, the company Orthanc Team, led by Alain Mazy, has taken over and consolidated the open-source business model. Meanwhile, Sébastien Jodogne continues to develop Orthanc from an academic perspective as a professor at UCLouvain.

This presentation aims to trace the history of Orthanc and present its main features, while highlighting the reasons why free software is a key factor in the resilience of a software project.
